Ridiculous! Over the last 20 or more years, my wife and I have visited hundreds of Antiques Centres in the UK and abroad. We buy (and occasionally sell) antiques costing from thousands to but a few pounds. It was our first visit to Selbys. I was looking at a large Victorian book whilst my wife was inspecting a small, obviously old, miniature chest of drawers. My wife asked me to look at the price tagged at over 900 which I commented to her - and only to her - that I thought ( and still think) the price was "ridiculous". A man, presumably the proprietor, had apparently overheard my comment. He lunged toward me and snatched the book out of my hand - technically an assault! He told us both to leave his shop immediately, which we both thought (at first) was merely him being jokey. He then said that "people like you" !!! "know nothing about antiques how dare you call the price ridiculous" and then launched into an astonishing and venomous tirade berating us constantly for our ignorance. He then proclaimed his self-righteous opinions that he alone knew anything worthwhile about antiques. It is rare that are both literally dumbstruck. If this person was Mr Selby he is quite evidently the most arrogant, self-righteous individual we have ever had the misfortune to encounter in ANY establishment. If he was an employee, he deserves to be dismissed forthwith. As we left, I sufficiently recovered my composure to state I'd leave an appropriately negative review. "Yes" he said, "Well people like you would, wouldn't you?". Damn right we would - ridiculous!
We loved looking round here and bought a couple of bits. Well worth a visit
